Goalkeepers don't usually steal the lime light in the attack-hungry sport, but that narrative changed courtesy of Ann-Katrin Berger in 2024. The German goalkeeper earned the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year title playing for NJ/NY Gotham FC with performances that brought security to her team and raised the goalkeeping position to a new level.
From crucial saves to her constant presence in the field, Berger was the backbone of a competitive and solid Gotham FC.
Already known as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in the league, Ann-Katrin Berger joined Gotham FC in April. It didn't take long to see why she was the right choice. In 22 games played, Berger let in just 16 goals-the fewest in the league-and kept eight clean sheets. Her 0.727 goals-against average and an impressive 80.49% save rate set her aside to be picked by the best in this season.
With 67 saves and 32 catches, Berger wasn't just protecting the goal but was commanding the defense, organizing the backline, and exuding calmness under pressure. These qualities allowed Gotham FC to play with greater confidence, knowing they had a dependable force guarding their net.
But it wasn't just the stats that defined Berger-it was about the big moments. In the Paris Olympics, Berger was part of Germany's efforts in securing the bronze medal. She saved two penalty kicks and even converted the decisive one in a quarterfinal win against Canada. She shone once again in the bronze medal match, saving a stoppage-time penalty against Spain to seal the victory.
Those moments also showed she can be calm under pressure and something she took into the NWSL season, whether it was a crucial save or a clean sheet; Berger always delivered and was the stabilizing force for Gotham FC. While other teams struggled for consistency, Berger was that reliable presence, match after match.
Eventually, she was not only named Goalkeeper of the Year but was also selected to the NWSL Best XI First Team, composed of the league's best players for the season. Further confirmation that she was not only the best at her position, but she was one of the best players across the league.
This recognition places Berger alongside legends like Alyssa Naeher and AD Franch. What sets her apart, however, is how she made an immediate impact on Gotham FC right in the debut NWSL season.
