Andre Onana has rallied behind Marcus Rashford following a troublesome campaign for the forward.

The Manchester United academy graduate entered 2023/2024 on the back of a career-best season, which saw him net 30 goals for the first time and play an integral role in the side finishing third and ending a six-year silverware drought by lifting the Carabao Cup; he scored in every round of the competition including the final against Newcastle United.

Upon the culmination of the term, he was deservedly voted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year before he put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension in July, with the club keen to reward his contributions while also fending off any potential outside interest.

Maintaining such prolific form in back-to-back seasons has proven difficult for Rashford, though, scoring just eight goals in 42 appearances across all competitions this time around.

Consequently, the 26-year-old was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s 30-man provisional Euros squad in what came as a shock decision from the England manager this week. Even if Rashford’s performances haven’t been up to scratch, he’s always provided for his nation and boasts an abundance of major tournament experience, which could prove vital in Germany next month.

Onana affirms faith in Rashford

Nevertheless, Rashford will have the summer to focus solely on his resurgence for United – and his teammate Onana will be backing him all the way.

“Rashford – how many goals did he score last season? (30) How many goals did he score this season? (8) We are talking about the same player.

“He’s a bad player? So last season he was good, [and] this season he is bad? No. It is just a moment. You can have a bad season. You can have a bad start. But the most important thing is how you end, and Rashy, for me, is one of the best players in the world.

“But he is facing difficulty, like us, not only him and me but the whole club,” the shot-stopper continued. “And he will come back, and I know my killer will score some important goals for us. Hopefully, [on] Saturday, he will score two, and we win the FA Cup.”
