Manchester United can transform their campaign by signing one of Europe’s in-form strikers during the winter transfer window.
The Red Devils have had a poor season in the Premier League, picking up only 22 points after 19 games.
The club have lacked the cutting edge in the final third in the absence of a stand-out goalscorer.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have misfired in the top flight, and the club need an upgrade.
The Daily Star claims manager Ruben Amorim has told the hierarchy that he wants to sign Viktor Gyokeres immediately.
However, Sporting CP won’t accept anything less than his £80 million release clause for his exit.
Marcus Rashford and Zirkzee are ‘expected’ to be offloaded in the coming weeks to facilitate the big-money deal.
It could still depend on the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe providing extra funds to bring Gyokeres to Old Trafford.
The Swede’s arrival could transform United’s fortunes during the second half of the season.
The 26-year-old had a superb 2023/24 season with 43 goals and 15 assists in 53 outings.
No European clubs were prepared to trigger his release clause last summer. He has continued his bright form this campaign with 27 goals and six assists in 27 appearances.
Gyokeres has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Sporting CP for £63m next summer. United will have to trigger the buy-out clause if they want him to sign him in January.
The club should make the huge outlay on the Swede, particularly with their struggles up front. Zirkzee and Hojlund have netted just five league goals between them this term.
Gyokeres would provide an instant solution for the Red Devils and he could adapt quickly, considering he is familiar with playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation under Amorim.
The striker, described as ‘unstoppable‘ by Coventry City left-back Jake Bidwell, could also relish the prospect of a reunion with Amorim despite United’s poor league form.
