Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 comeback triumph over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.
The Red Devils failed to register a single shot on target in the opening half and trailed at the break after a Josko Gvardiol goal from a corner.
However, they were much better after the interval and eventually equalised after Amad Diallo won a penalty from a Matheus Nunes foul.
Bruno Fernandes made it 1-1 in the 88th minute. Diallo bagged the winning goal 115 seconds later after initially lobbing the ball over Ederson.
It was a dramatic end to the Manchester derby and keeps United in the Champions League hunt.
Despite the stunning result, there were some disappointing performances. Diogo Dalot was particularly disappointing.
The Portuguese was at fault for the opening goal after failing to track Gvardiol’s run. He also failed to offer anything in an attacking sense.
The 25-year-old failed to win any of his seven duels. He committed four fouls and did not complete either of his crosses.
Dalot lost possession ten times. His 85 percent passing accuracy was decent, but he once again struggled in his new role.
He received a 4/10 rating from Manchester Evening News after the game.
The Porto graduate had a brilliant 2023/24 season where he impressed at left-back, but he has simply failed to adapt to the wing-back position.
Manager Ruben Amorim has started Dalot in almost every game since he took charge. He must drop him on the back of several average displays.
United remain 13th in the league table despite the win, but they are now within six points of Nottingham Forest, who are fourth.
The club need to build a winning streak in the coming weeks to close the gap to the Champions League places before January.
The Red Devils’ immediate focus should turn to the Carabao Cup, where they are scheduled to visit Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-final on Thursday.
