The need for Manchester City to sign another defender is obvious to see by now. Injuries have struck John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake regularly so far this season. The injury situation that has plagued City’s centre-backs is unsustainable. Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov is a potential target for Manchester City. Now it has emerged that the Lens Defender is available to buy this month. It’s now a situation the world champions must take advantage of.
In an interview with DAZN, Lens managing director Pierre Dréossi said that Abdukodir Khusanov will be sold this month. Speaking with DAZN he explained: “(Abdukodir) Khusanov will leave, there haven’t been any good bids yet. There will be departures and arrivals. We will have more than enough quality players to qualify for Europe. If he is to leave and if the bids are interesting enough, above all, it’s about finding an economic balance.”
Since Abdukodir Khusanov emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester City it has seemed to be the easiest deal for them to compete. Now, following the comments from Lens director Pierre Dréossi, it is clear that Khusanov is an attainable player in the January transfer window.
Manchester City’s defensive frailties have stood out this season. As mentioned above injuries have severely depleted City’s defensive stocks. Also, the poor form of a host of players has further exacerbated the issue. A young defender like Abdukodir Khusanov could help alleviate these issues. With his pace, the young centre-back could help with Manchester City’s high defensive line, and his strength in a challenge could be a valuable asset in Pep Guardiola’s side. Khusanov is also young with his best football ahead of him. He ticks every box required for a potential City signing. It’s now time for them to move to capture his signature if City deems him to be the right player to fortify their defence.
The path now appears to be clear for Manchester City to move for Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov. Based on what has transpired this season it should be a transfer move they make to kickstart the January transfer window. Pep Guardiola’s squad needs reinforcements and it now seems that a young defender is there to be signed. It will now be interesting to see if Manchester City do now make their move for a player they desperately need.
