Alexander Isak has been informed by Newcastle United that he will not be sold this summer, with the club determined to block any move to Liverpool, according to The Telegraph.

The Sweden international is said to be furious at the decision, which has led to him being ordered to train away from the first-team squad by manager Eddie Howe. The striker will not feature for Newcastle until he accepts the club’s stance.

Newcastle’s Saudi owners, the Public Investment Fund, have taken a hard-line approach, rejecting a Liverpool bid worth around £110 million last week. The Telegraph claim the club’s position is 'extremely unlikely' to change, even if another forward is brought in.

Isak has three years left on his contract and expressed his desire to explore a move while the team travelled to Singapore for their pre-season tour, which he missed due to what was described as a minor thigh injury. He subsequently trained alone at former club Real Sociedad without Newcastle’s permission.

Howe revealed on Friday following their 2-2 draw with Espanyol that he 'can’t involve' Isak at present, though he has not ruled out the possibility of reintegrating the player.

Newcastle are expected to revisit contract talks after the transfer window closes, potentially inserting a release clause into a new deal.

The Magpies’ hierarchy have dismissed suggestions of a gentleman’s agreement allowing Isak to leave this summer and are frustrated with the role played by his representatives. Liverpool’s bid last week fell extremely short of Newcastle’s £150 million valuation, with co-owner Jamie Reuben and the board united in resisting the sale.

The transfer window closes on September 1, leaving the possibility of further developments in what has become a tense stand-off between club and player.
