In a social media post acknowledging his place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has revealed that “promises were made” surrounding his future and that “the relationship can’t continue”.

The 25-year-old, who signed for the Magpies in 2022, has long been linked with a move away from Tyneside this summer. Arne Slot’s Liverpool are understood to have already had a bid in excess of £100m rejected by Newcastle United, though The Sun understand that the Reds are set to offer a higher fee to secure the Swedish forward’s services.

Isak revealed via his Instagram Story on Tuesday that “I’m not at the [PFA] ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.”

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors,” he continued.

The Sweden international added that “the reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.”

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

It is understood that Isak was frozen out of Newcastle United’s team that was held to a 0-0 draw by Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the Premier League season – and given that the Magpies‘ next outing comes against Liverpool, the 25-year-old is likely to be sidelined for that clash too.
