The conflict erupted after Newcastle turned down a substantial £110 million offer from Liverpool for the Swedish international. In protest, Isak has refused to participate in any team training sessions or make himself available for selection.

He took his grievances to Instagram, stating the club had reneged on a commitment to allow him a summer departure. Newcastle's hierarchy swiftly issued a rebuttal, declaring their stance that the player is not for sale and fully expecting him to fulfill his contractual obligations.
