The unexpected qualification of the New York Red Bulls over the favored Columbus Crew in the best-of-three series, achieved last Sunday (3), had an extra element to fuel the Red Bulls players: Major League Soccer’s (MLS) own social media.

“Some players got upset because MLS was only posting stuff about them (Columbus). So, we just played soccer,” revealed forward Elias Manoel, who took part in both matchups against Columbus.

However, Elias, who scored in the penalty shootout that secured the Red Bulls’ advancement, acknowledges that the opponent eliminated on Sunday (3) deserved to be the favorite in the series. “We knew it would be tough. They were the best in the league.”

FC Cincinnati or New York City FC: “No preference”

Right after securing a spot in the next round of the MLS playoffs, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel expressed his preference for facing FC Cincinnati in the series against New York City FC, stating that the Ohio club has a dedicated soccer stadium.

Unlike his teammate, Elias takes a more diplomatic stance on choosing the next opponent. “At this stage of the tournament, I don’t think we have much to choose from. We got past Columbus, which was the hardest.”

However, the Brazilian forward is clear in acknowledging that the New York Red Bulls won’t be the favorite against either Cincinnati or New York City: “for sure.”
