Let’s hope talk of Brendan getting a big budget is true, but I’ll believe it when I see it…

There’s been some chat amongst several journalists recently that Brendan Rodgers is set to be handed a significant transfer budget to spend in the summer window.

If true we can all look forward to some quality signings being brought in the door. It’s what we want, and more importantly what Brendan craves as he aims to not only bring us more success domestically, but make us a more competitive side on the European scene.

But to the cynics like myself within the Celtic support,  it all feels like a classic case of Deja vu. Sorry to sound pessimistic, but we’ve heard all this chatter before, as recently as the January window.

After all it was only last year that the same names were reporting that Brendan had came back with the promise of a big budget, leading us to dream of big things ahead. Every picture tells a story and this was the Stephen McGowan and John McGarry exclusive story in the Daily Mail on 114 June 2023.

We were told that the “Parkhead board have agreed to back Brendan’s Champions League dream” then we got a host of project signings which had nothing much to do with Brendan Rodgers or his desire to re-establish Celtic as a contender in European football.

In the end we had to endure two very disappointing transfer windows with no one of true quality arriving, leaving our squad depth the poorest it’s been in years. The one signing that had a major Rodgers influence was Adam Idah, on a loan deal from Norwich City which ends this weekend. Hopefully the same Celtic Board will get a permanent deal with the English Championship side sorted for starters.

It’s been assumed that the pressure we put on those in charge these past few months or so has led to a different approach in our transfer dealings, but it’s all just chatter at the moment and nothing concrete has been confirmed regarding our summer transfer plans.

Season tickets have been renewed in big numbers, so the money men have their cash safely tucked away in the bank for another year. Brendan has delivered the title so the massive windfall from the new and expanded Champions League is guaranteed and there’s the small matter of the tens of millions resting in the Celtic PLC bank account.

The big question is, will Brendan see a big chunk of that cash to invest in the squad? We can only live in hope. But I’ll believe it when I see it.
