Rico Lewis has made his intentions clear. The Manchester City academy graduate has dismissed speculation about a potential move to Nottingham Forest, underlining that his heart and future lie at the Etihad. At just 20 years of age, Lewis is not only refusing to look elsewhere but is embracing the challenge of establishing himself under Pep Guardiola, suggests a recent report by The Mail.
The England international shone in City’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Wolves, assisting Erling Haaland’s opener while deployed at right back ahead of Matheus Nunes. His versatility, particularly his ability to step into midfield, gives Guardiola invaluable tactical flexibility. As Lewis put it, “I’ve never ever seen myself at a different club – I’ve always wanted to play for City. It’s my dream club, and like you see (at Wolves), when I’m playing with the kind of players that I’m playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I’m so happy.”

Lewis’ emergence is a story of resilience. Last season he started only four of City’s final 16 games and was left out entirely for the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace. Rather than becoming disheartened, he has chosen to view the situation as an opportunity to improve. “It’s difficult. Everyone wants assurance and security, but at the end of the day, it’s on me. It’s on me to perform. It’s on me to take the chances when I do.”
The youngster also reflected on his gradual progression. “Last season I played more than the season before, this season I want to play more than last season, so it’s always the same goal – becoming an established player.”
City reportedly value Lewis at more than £30 million, and Guardiola has already spoken with the defender about his role this campaign. While there remains uncertainty around how frequently he will feature, there is no doubt about his importance to City’s future. His link-up play with fellow academy graduate Oscar Bobb has also shown that this generation of homegrown talent can thrive on the biggest stage.
As Lewis himself said, “After that, there’s nothing I can’t blame myself (for). If I take my own chances, I do it. If I don’t, then I have to work and get better.” It is a grounded outlook, one that reflects the hunger and humility City fans will admire.
From a Manchester City supporter’s perspective, this update will be received with excitement. Seeing a local academy graduate declare unwavering loyalty to the club is refreshing in an era where transfers dominate the headlines. Supporters will feel pride hearing Lewis describe City as his “dream club,” especially as Forest’s interest highlighted just how highly rated he already is across the Premier League.
Fans will also take heart from Lewis’ self-awareness. He knows minutes are not guaranteed and acknowledges that his career progression depends on performances when opportunities come. This sense of accountability, echoed in his words, “It’s on me to perform. It’s on me to take the chances when I do,” suggests a mentality that Guardiola trusts.
However, there is still an undercurrent of concern. The squad depth at City means talented players can struggle for consistent game time. Some fans will remember Phil Foden’s gradual integration and hope Lewis avoids prolonged spells on the fringes. The valuation of over £30 million also raises questions about whether City would listen to offers in the future.
Overall, Lewis’ commitment is a welcome boost, particularly after a summer of speculation. City supporters will expect him to feature more prominently this season, linking well with Oscar Bobb and offering tactical flexibility. The sentiment is clear: here is a player who embodies both the club’s future and its values.
