After two consecutive promotions, Wrexham are preparing for life in League One, and that means that Phil Parkinson and the club's hierarchy will be looking to strengthen their squad.

Everyone knows how ambitious the North Walian club are with Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney owning the club, and they won't be afraid to splash the cash this summer as they look to make it three consecutive promotions.

The Red Dragons have recently been linked with a move for Welsh international midfielder Joe Morrell, with the 27-year-old set to become a free agent at the end of the month.

Morell has spent the last three seasons at Portsmouth, helping the club win promotion to the Championship, but the Welshman has been out injured since January, which led to Pompey not triggering an extension to his contract. However, Pompey boss John Mousinho has confirmed talks between the club and the player's representatives are still ongoing.

Wrexham aren't alone in their interest in Morrell, with Phil Cadden reporting that their League One rivals Birmingham City are keen on a move, along with Championship side QPR.

Our Wrexham fan pundit, Liam Grice, believes that Morrell fits the bill as a good signing for the Red Dragons, but is aware that they'll face stiff competition from big clubs in League One, and clubs in the Championship.

Speaking to Football League World, Liam said: "I think Joe Morrell is somebody who is the calibre of player that Wrexham should be targeting.

"Obviously, we don’t know what he’s going to be like when he’s back from his injury, but he was a regular for Portsmouth before that, who were at a very high level.

"He’s an international for Wales, so he’s definitely proved he can do it on the biggest of stages.

"We are going to have to beat a few clubs for his signing. Birmingham are rumoured to be interested, and they’re a massive club and they’ll have the money to go and buy him, and Championship clubs QPR and Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in him as well, so there’s going to be competition, but he’s definitely a player we should be targeting."

Joe Morrell would be an excellent signing for Wrexham

With experience at Championship level, League One level and on the international stage, Morrell would be a great addition to Wrexham's ranks.

It's the type of signing that will benefit the club without breaking the bank, and as a 37-cap Welsh international, he'd certainly be a popular signing amongst the club's supporters.

Wrexham will be looking to strengthen all over the park this summer, but defensive midfield will be a position of need with just George Evans on the club's books in that position.

It's clear to see how highly-rated Morrell is, with clubs in the Championship interested in signing him, along with Birmingham City, who are looking to assemble a very strong squad for the third tier of English football.

Given the calibre of clubs interested in him, it won't be easy to get a deal over the line for the midfielder, but Wrexham will hope that the feel-good factor around the club, coupled with Morrell's Welsh heritage, will help get a deal over the line for the 27-year-old in the coming months.
