As Manchester City beat Bournemouth 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium yesterday players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan showed that they can still play a role for Pep Guardiola’s side. Both players played a key role in Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final win. But in the background to the final stages of the 24/25 season, the potential of several key players leaving Manchester City does loom large. A new report has indicated who could leave the club in the summer and who is being viewed as their potential replacements.

Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish could all leave Manchester City this summer. Furthermore, Plettenberg reports that Manchester City are planning a squad overhaul this summer. Plettenberg adds that Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz and Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson are two players City have an interest in signing.

It isn’t groundbreaking news that Manchester City are set to embark on a squad overhaul this summer. The need for that to take place has been apparent for some time. The 24/25 season has been a battle for Pep Guardiola’s side. To rejuvenate the City squad we will see a host of City’s heroes depart in the summer. The move has to take place as Manchester City can’t add players without seeing key players leave. That’s just the way it is.

The hope is that Manchester City’s heroes can add to their legacies before the season ends.

While we will see Manchester City’s heroes depart the hope is that they can add to their legacies on the way out. We saw Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan all play a key role in City’s win yesterday. They can all still contribute at a high level. Although, at times they have struggled this season. But if they could help Manchester City win the FA Cup and qualify for next season’s Champions League it would be a fitting end to their time at Manchester City. That statement would ring true if we do see Grealish, De Bruyne, or Gundogan leave in the summer, as Florian Plettenberg suggests.

But if City could sign Florian Wirtz and Hugo Larsson in the summer the platform could be set for their arrival. They could potentially be arriving at the Etihad to start Manchester City’s next era of dominance. If City’s departing heroes can ensure Champions League qualification and claim the FA Cup Manchester City’s new signings will be arriving at a club eager to kick on once again.
