A debut to forget for São Paulo’s new signing

Gonzalo Tapia made his first appearance for São Paulo on Saturday in the heated Majestoso derby against Corinthians at MorumBIS, stepping onto the pitch in the 15th round of the Brasileirão, according to Arquibancada Tricolor. The Chilean forward, recently signed on loan from River Plate, entered the match in the 79th minute as Luciano made way.

Tapia’s introduction gave São Paulo fans an early glimpse of the club’s newest attacking option, but his time on the field was limited and largely uneventful. Over just more than 15 minutes, he attempted two shots, both of which missed the target. One effort notably squandered São Paulo's best chance to extend their lead late in the game. In terms of duels, Tapia managed to win just one out of four contested, illustrating the transitional challenge he faces in adapting to the Brazilian league’s physicality and tempo.

The 22-year-old’s debut was further marked by a late yellow card, picked up during stoppage time for a heavy challenge on an opponent. The card capped a performance that otherwise did little to alter the course of the contest, with São Paulo already holding their advantage over Corinthians.

Stats from Sofascore reflect the subdued nature of Tapia’s debut, awarding him a match rating of 6.2. Such a figure mirrors a performance without significant impact—understandable given the limited opportunity. The hope among São Paulo staff and supporters is that increased match rhythm and further integration into Hernán Crespo’s plans will allow Tapia to find his footing in the coming rounds.

São Paulo, stretched by multiple injuries in recent weeks, called on Tapia immediately after his paperwork was finalized, a sign of their urgent need for reinforcement in attack. As the squad continues to navigate fitness absences and a congested schedule, Tapia is expected to see more minutes while acclimating to his new environment.

Looking ahead, Tapia will aim to build on this opening experience and offer tangible contributions as São Paulo seek to climb the league table. The technical staff sees promise in his profile and will hope that early struggles give way to a more assertive impact as his adaptation continues.
