Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been named in the BBC’s Premier League Team of the Week, following his heroics against Fulham.

United kicked off their 2024/25 top-flight campaign with a 1-0 home win against Marco Silva’s men.

Debutant Joshua Zirkzee may have scored the all-important goal for United and subsequently grabbed all the headlines but the unsung hero for the team was Maguire.

The England international was a rock at the back as he produced some moments of defensive brilliance that kept the Cottagers from breaching Andre Onana’s goal.

The highlight of Maguire’s performance was a sensational tackle when he was up against two Fulham players, which kept them from breaking through on goal and testing Onana.

During the 81 minutes he was on the pitch, the former Red Devils skipper made five clearances, three interceptions and won five of the six aerial duels he contested.

Troy Deeney selected his team and manager of the week after the opening weekend of the new season and included Maguire in BBC’s XI.

Deeney selected the 31-year-old as part of a backline also consisting of Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ruben Dias (Manchester City) and Dan Burn (Newcastle).

On why he picked Maguire, Deeney wrote, “He was a beast for Manchester United against Fulham.”

“Just doing what he does, nothing weird and wonderful, but he looked like a big solid centre-half – which is what he is.”

Deeney’s XI is not the only one Maguire features in.

The United man was also selected by statistics website WhoScored.com, who handed him a rating of 7.44.

In WhoScored.com’s XI, Maguire was part of a defensive quartet also consisting of Pedro Perro (Tottenham Hotspur), Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City) and Antonee Robinson (Fulham).

Earlier this week, Maguire spoke to club media and insisted that he is relishing this campaign and the challenges that lie on the way.

He has certainly started well.
