It’s been a bad week for injuries at Chelsea football club.
The Blues saw both Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu hurt last Monday night, but when we faced Brighton a week ago today in the FA Cup there was plenty of confidence that Jackson at least would be back for today’s repeat fixture in the league.
However last night’s Enzo Maresca press conference revealed both would be out for a while, leaving Chelsea high and dry without a recognised striker and putting into sharp focus our need to bring in another viable option in the summer.
Various names get mentioned a lot, some more plausible than others, but one we’re really convinced is someone we’re looking at it Matheus Cunha. His impressive development for Wolves continues, and he’s got 14 G/A already this season. We’ve been linked to him since last summer.
CaughtOffside today that Man U, Tottenham and Arsenal are in the chase for the Brazilian along with Chelsea. Even more interestingly they mention a concrete €62m release clause. That’s very similar to the €63m we paid to the same team last summer for Pedro Neto.

Cunha is a little older, and at 25 may be considered too old by our sporting directors. But if they’re ruling him out on that basis, that feels short sighted if he’s got the tools to be a useful player for us. We bought Joao Felix at the same age last summer, and we didn’t even need him.
It would be crazy to stick to our own self imposed rules in a position we’re short, while bending and breaking them for players we really don’t need. Cunha has a bit of attitude about him and an eye for goal. He’s a little rough around the edges, but that might just add something to this team of youngsters.
