Esteemed Kompany host Steven Mcinerney looks at 5 things we learned from Manchester City’s massive 2-nil win over Tottenham in the video below. The win saw Pep Guardiola’s squad take control of the title race heading into their final day clash with West Ham on Sunday.
Here are 5 things we learned from Manchester City’s win over Tottenham.
Stefan Ortega made a heroic cameo during the second half of City’s win. He came on in the 69th minute to replace Ederson, who went down injured. The performance from Ortega has the potential to go down in Manchester City folklore. He made three absolutely massive saves, which kept City’s lead until Erling Haaland sealed all three points in the 91st minute.
Heading into the summer, there are doubts over Ortega’s future at the club. Jack Gaughan has reported the Daily Mail that City have a battle on their hands to keep Ortega. Based on his performances this season and against Spurs, they must do whatever it takes to keep Ortega at the club.
Josko Gvardiol has taken his game up another level in recent weeks. He put in another fine display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night.
While he didn’t score, his defensive work was utterly crucial to City’s win. His performance at left-back, especially in the first half, was crucial to City’s win.
He has become one of the premier left-backs in the Premier League, and arguably Europe based off his form lately. Gvardiol was at it again against Tottenham. Manchester City has a Rolls Royce of a footballer in Gvardiol. He showed it again on Tuesday night.
A theme running throughout this season has been the criticism of the overall play of Erling Haaland. That criticism has been wide of the mark as Haaland’s job is to score goals. His overall play is developing, but he is there to score goals, and he did so on the biggest stage on Tuesday night.
In recent weeks, Haaland has returned to his devastating best. He has now scored 7 goals in City’s last four Premier League wins over Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Fulham, and Tottenham. The critics have been silenced as Haaland has made a pivotal contribution to City’s chase for a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
This season has seen Phil Foden rise to become the main man for Manchester City. His performances have been nothing short of spectacular this season as he has taken his game to another level. The potential was always there for Foden to become one of the best players in English football. He has made that leap this season.
Foden put in another dominant performance against Tottenham. Both of City’s goals came from pieces of magic from City’s wonderboy. When the stakes were at their highest, Foden changed the game. That is the mark of a great player.
Phil Foden has become City’s main man this season. If Manchester City do make it four consecutive Premier League titles on Sunday, Foden’s remarkable rise will have been a key piece in their success.
One more win stands between Manchester City and a feat never before achieved in English football. The champions will face West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday as they bid to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Immortality is one game away for Pep Guardiola’s side. Given Manchester City’s history, Sunday’s final game of the Premier League season will no doubt have twists and turns. But they do pick up the victory they require on Sunday their place in English football history will be secured.
