€40m price drop puts Chelsea right back in the mix for wonderkid winger

We’ve reported a few times now on the idea that Jamie Gittens could be a major target for Chelsea this summer.

He’s young, talented, English and still on the rise, making him a dream target for our current model. So far, there’s been just one thing holding us back from thinking we could be seriously interested – the price tag. Earlier reports, probably influenced by his club Borussia Dortmund, claimed that they would want something like €100m for him.

That’s just not something we can see Chelsea doing this summer.

However the recent report from Sky Germany that he could move for as little as €60m changes the game entirely.

That’s barely more than we paid for Pedro Neto last summer, for a player who is both more highly rated and younger. If it were true that we could land Gittens for that price, we reckon the sporting directors would sign off on it right now.

Of course it’s likely to be far more complicated than that – there are a lot of teams reportedly interested and that will drive the price up. But the whole operation is sounding more and more feasible by the day.

Gittens has a big field opening up for him

Liverpool and Bayern Munich are mentioned as potential rivals for Chelsea in the chase to sign Gittens, and both would be difficult to beat in a race for the winger’s signature. The 20 year old is likely going to have his pick of clubs once Dortmund name their price, and it will be down to the Blues to prove they’re the best option for him.

Despite our recent spend on wingers, most Blues fans would like to see the youngster come in, with many remaining unconvinced by Jadon Sancho and some of our other wide options.
