33-Year-Old Player Closing In On A Move To West Ham United: Is This A Good Deal For The Hammers?

Over the past few years, West Ham United have established themselves as a team that can challenge for European places, but have struggled with consistency. They have had some great moments under David Moyes – whether it’s the Conference League trophy or a top-half finish in the Premier League- but the 2024/25 season was a disappointment, with several injuries and some failed transfer decisions leaving the team floundering. Now, with Graham Potter at the helm, the club are preparing to overhaul their squad ahead of the new season.

The search for a striker has become their biggest priority. Nicklas Fullkrug failed to live up to expectations last season, and Evan Ferguson’s loan spell was a flop. West Ham are now looking for an experienced option who can make an immediate impact, and that search has led the club to an old Premier League predator.

According to Graeme Bailey’s report on TBR Football, West Ham United have decided to sign Callum Wilson. The 33-year-old striker is a free agent after being released from Newcastle United and is now set to join the east London club. The two parties have reached an ‘Agreement in Principle’, which will see Wilson receive a nominal salary and performance-based bonuses.

Callum Wilson’s career has always been plagued by injuries, but he never stopped scoring goals whenever he was fit. He scored dozens of important goals for Bournemouth and Newcastle United. His movement, positioning and finishing can still beat any young forward today. 141 goals and 48 assists in almost 400 matches—these figures show that experience is nothing less than a statistic.

Will this move prove beneficial for West Ham?

This transfer is risky, but it is also a wise gamble. With the club in need of a striker and a limited budget, a pay-as-you-play deal seems to make sense. If Wilson stays fit, he could provide West Ham with 10-15 goals, especially as the club look to get back into the European fray.

On the other hand, if he gets injured again, the club will not suffer a financial loss. This deal could prove to be low-risk and high-reward for the club. His experience will also benefit the younger players in the squad. So all in all, West Ham have made a smart move. If Callum Wilson’s body supports him, this signing could become one of the most important stories of next season.
