Monday night’s match ended Newcastle 2 Liverpool 3.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting night at St James’ Park…
Plenty to talk about after this one.
On this occasion it is The Armchair Fan:
Newcastle went toe-to-toe with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool on Monday night in a match that had just about everything.
With so many talking points, it’s not the easiest of tasks to select just three good and three bad to discuss, but here goes.
POSITIVES
Performance
This was an unbelievable effort from everyone in black and white, especially as we played the entire second half with ten men.
In a match that lasted over one-hundred minutes, the Toon were by far the better team and showed once again we can mix it with the top sides in the league.
Every single player looked up for this one from the very first second and put in a shift that could well have won the match.
Without the red card we definitely could have taken all three points.
Goals
After dominating Aston Villa the previous weekend but failing to score, doubts were cast on our ability to stick the ball in the onion bag, especially in the absence of a certain want-away striker.
In the end though, United scored two cracking goals through Bruno and Osula. More again on Saturday please.
Atmosphere
The Toon fans were in the mood and created an unbelievable atmosphere throughout the match, with the Liverpool players clearly rattled in the first half and on the back foot throughout.
With ‘Wor Flags’ once again providing an unforgettable display, the Toon Army was out in force with Liverpool players being booed before they’d even got off the team bus. Keep this up throughout the season and we really could have a fortress to be reckoned with.
NEGATIVES
Result
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, football is a results business and the fact of the matter is we lost.
Despite this probably being the best you could feel after a performance in defeat, the only stat that matters is how many goals were scored and unfortunately we came up just short.
Availability
Anthony Gordon’s red card means he’ll be banned for the next three Premier League matches.
In addition, we also lost Tonali, Joelinton and Schar to injury during the match, meaning more first team players will be unavailable for Saturday’s match away at Leeds.
One suspended, one on strike and potentially three injured, which may well stretch our already thin squad to its limits.
Last-minute heartbreak
To the list of Collymore, Fowler, Redknapp, Carvalho and Nunez, we can now add Ngumoha.
All of the above have inflicted last minute heartache on Newcastle United when scoring winning goals for Liverpool against the Toon in injury time.
When Osula nipped in to score a well deserved NUFC equaliser, it seemed like we’d secured at least a point and might even have enough in the tank to go on and achieve a famous victory.
Unfortunately, when the winning goal came, it was scored by the reds at the death – a real sickener.
