2 Premier League targets that should be on Bolton Wanderers’ radar this week

Bolton Wanderers' business may not be done this summer and they could well look at Alfie Devine and Sam Amo-Ameyaw as potential loan deals.

Key Takeaways

  • Bolton Wanderers are not done with signings yet, as Ian Evatt suggests more players could leave before the transfer window closes.
  • Potential targets include Alfie Devine, who has experience in the Championship but may find regular playtime in League One appealing.
  • Another target could be winger Sam Amo-Ameyaw from Southampton, who has shown promise and may be available for a loan to bolster Bolton's attacking options.

Bolton Wanderers have done some good business this summer with eight additions to a squad that narrowly missed out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season and then lost the League One play-off final in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, it may not be the case that the Trotters’ business is done with surely there being room for another attacking player as well as other areas of the squad not looking entirely finalised.

Ian Evatt himself has confirmed that overall business is not done with the Bolton manager expecting there could well be two or three players leaving the squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

However, departures may not be the only thing for Bolton to do in the next ten days or so with a couple of areas to fill and, as Evatt said, star Premier League loanees wouldn’t happen until late in the window as a result of pre-season places being filled by younger players due to summer tournaments, such as UEFA EURO 2024 and the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America, slowing and disrupting pre-season preparations down for leading clubs.

It's a market we've seen Bolton look to take advantage of before. Here are a couple of names in the Premier League that should and could well be on the radar of Bolton this summer ahead of the transfer deadline.

Alfie Devine

One player that Wanderers may well be keeping their eye on this week is former Wigan Athletic midfielder Alfie Devine, who has been linked with a move to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on loan before the close of the window. The Tottenham Hotspur youngster would seem ideally suited to the Whites’ 3-4-2-1 system in one of the two slots behind the striker.

Devine, who also came through the academy at Liverpool before joining Wigan, spent the first half of last season on loan with Port Vale but then took a step up to the second tier with Plymouth Argyle.

That may make it seem like any move Wanderers could make for the 20-year-old would be ambitious and a bit of a coup. He has 13 caps for the England U20 side and there may be a feeling Wanderers may have missed the boat.

But Devine did not take the Championship by storm and the offer of regular minutes in League One, for a club chasing promotion, may appeal.

Sam Amo-Ameyaw

A potentially more realistic incoming would be Sam Amo-Ameyaw at Southampton.

The 18-year-old winger broke through into the Saints’ first-team squad last season as they gained promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, making three appearances for the club – albeit he actually made his league debut in the Premier League in their relegation season of 2022/23.

Amo-Ameyaw has enjoyed an impressive pre-season and that actually led to him being brought on by Russell Martin on the opening day of the season against Newcastle United at St James’ Park this weekend.

Once again, Amo-Ameyaw may well have surpassed a League One loan but with players being brought in to bolster attacking positions at St. Mary’s, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him head out on a temporary basis.

The fact he is left-footed will also be something that makes Bolton very keen given their lack of left-footed attacking options.
