Ajax hosted FC Twente on Saturday and were forced to split the points after a 0-0 draw.
It was third against fifth in the Eredivisie, and Ajax looked to move on from a poor performance against NEC but struggled once again in the league.
The visitors dominated the field in Amsterdam, holding more possession of the ball and registering a staggering 12 first-half attempts (two of which hit the post) compared to four for the hosts.
However, Kenneth Taylor, Davy Klassen and Francisco Conceição put 100% of Ajax’s attempts on target, signalling they were knocking on the door.
A game-changing decision came in the first half, though, when defender Devyne Rensch denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
He was subsequently shown red but also suffered an injury after a boot to the face and was stretched off.
Coming out into the second half, Twente had an opportunity to stun Amsterdam with a man advantage and attempted to put Ajax to the sword.
The visitors registered a total of 24 shots, with Ramiz Zerrouki and Michel Vlap coming close to breaking the deadlock, yet the hosts remained formidable.
In the end, the teams split the points in a goalless draw, meaning Ajax have 32 points and Twente have 31.
Title challengers PSV Eindhoven, meanwhile, have 31 points, and leaders Feyenoord have 34. Both clubs have a game in hand as well.
A huge clash now lingers for the reigning champions as the title continues to slip away, with De Klassieker set for next week.
