There were no changes in the FC Barcelona squad in the last winter transfer window, but this lack of activity in the market does in no way suggest a lack of activity in the Blaugrana club’s sporting offices.

This is particularly the case, as the Catalans had quite a busy transfer window, in which they not only had to deal with the thorny issue of Pau Victor and Dani Olmo’s registrations but also had to ensure the renewal of several players whose contracts were ending in the next one and a half year.

In this regard, they successfully renewed the contracts of Ronald Araujo, Gerard Martin, Pedri, and Gavi, while they are also reportedly quite ready to renew Inigo Martinez.

However, as MARCA has reported, there is also an important player on whose renewal there has been no work done in recent times, and there are not many hopes for the near future as well, i.e., the midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Negotiations between the two parties for a renewal have been going on for more than a year, but their positions still remain quite distant and the few meetings that have been undertaken between them only showcased the lack of harmony between them.

The negotiations with other players like Araujo, Pedri, and Gavi also had their ups and downs, but they ultimately were able to iron out their differences. However, Frenkie’s entourage has not even shown any propensity to negotiate, and there are no meetings or conversations planned in the coming days.

Without many hopes about reaching a renewal agreement with him, Barcelona are clear that if he does not renew, he will be placed on the market, to avoid losing him for free.

Even if the €45m-rated Dutchman leaves, this would not be a very difficult loss for the Blaugranes as Hansi Flick has several other midfield options at his disposal, and also because his mammoth salary will be removed from their wage bill.
