However, Zaniolo denied Roma’s version of the events in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“This time I’m not going along with it,” said Zaniolo.

“When I’ve done something stupid, like with the referee last time at the Olimpico, I’ve always taken responsibility by accepting the punishment, the disqualification, but in this case I can’t be seen as the one who starts fights and puts his hands on a kid.”

“I know I reacted badly and I take responsibility for it. I want to be very frank: I had to pee and the first bathroom I found was the one in the Roma locker room, I asked permission to enter and they granted it to me with a smile. “What, do you even have to ask?”. When I passed the boys I gave them a high five and said well done.”

“When I came out of the bathroom, one of these boys provoked me in a loud voice and when I asked him if he was referring to me he approached me. I lost my temper but I didn’t hit him.”

“It’s a mistake that weighs on me, especially because I know I have to be an example for the younger ones. However, I want to point out that the facts are far from what has been reconstructed and that on my part, apart from a verbal argument, there was no aggressive behavior.”
