The Magpies’ latest offer is £35m plus £5m in add-ons, and the club were confident their bid would be successful.

Wissa, who was absent from Brentford’s 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, has made clear his desire to leave Brentford, and the Bees have resumed talks with Newcastle.

Brentford, who raised their valuation for Wissa to £60m last week, rejected a £25m bid from Newcastle earlier in the window.

The Bees were worried they wouldn’t be able to bring in a replacement for the 28-year-old before the end of the window.

Were Wissa to leave, Brentford would be left with just one senior striker, Igor Thiago, who, despite scoring against Forest, endured an injury-hit debut campaign last season.

Wissa, who wants to play Champions League football, deleted all mention of Brentford from his Instagram on Monday.

The Congolese forward is said to have been left frustrated at not being able to pursue a move away from Brentford despite supposedly being given assurances he could depart this summer.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews said Wissa was not in the right headspace to play against Forest last weekend and added after the game that he was no clearer on when his future would be resolved.

Newcastle are in the market for a striker, even though they expect wantaway forward Alexander Isak to remain at the club.

Isak released a statement on his Instagram on Tuesday night reiterating his desire to leave Newcastle, but the club replied saying the striker was not for sale.
