Real Madrid’s managerial plans for the future are becoming increasingly clear, and at the heart of those plans is Xabi Alonso, the club’s top target to take over the reins.
Now, according to Real Madrid Confidencial, Alonso has already begun shaping his vision for the squad and has specifically asked the club to pursue Alvaro Carreras, the talented Benfica left-back.
The left-back position has been one of Real Madrid’s most uncertain spots this season. Neither Fran Garcia nor Ferland Mendy has managed to fully convince the club with consistent performances.
While Mendy remains a reliable defender on his day, injury setbacks and inconsistency have plagued his form. Garcia, on the other hand, has shown flashes of brilliance but has lacked the stability required at the top level.
The club has explored other solutions like Miguel Gutierrez, but Alonso appears to prefer a more complete and future-proof option, someone he believes can become a key part of the new era at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carreras, who currently plays for Benfica, has caught Alonso’s attention with his pace, defensive intelligence, and attacking flair from the flank.
Formerly part of the Manchester United youth system, Carreras has made a name for himself in Portugal and is considered one of the brightest young left-backs in European football.
The 22-year-old’s impressive displays have not gone unnoticed, and Manchester United reportedly retain a buy-back clause and are monitoring his progress closely.
However, Alonso is determined to act swiftly and bring him to the Spanish capital before the English giants can make their move.
It must be noted that Carreras is under contract with Benfica until 2029, and his current buy-out clause stands at €50 million.
While the fee is significant, Real Madrid are expected to be active in the summer transfer window and could be willing to invest in a player Alonso believes is “essential” to his tactical plans.
