Shea Charles has been attracting interest from Leicester City and West Ham United after a successful first half of his loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 21-year-old joined the Owls on a season-long loan from Southampton in the summer and has been a revelation for Danny Röhl's side as they continue to exceed expectations.

According to Mail Online, the Hammers have been making regular checks on the midfielder, while the Foxes are also reportedly interested in his services.

Charles has been ever-present in Wednesday's starting eleven this season and has started every single one of their 22 Championship matches. Furthermore, he has chipped in with one goal and four assists as the Owls have climbed to an impressive ninth position.

The 21-year-old has looked a cut above the Championship this season, and it is no wonder that reports have been linking him with a Premier League return.

When asked how much of a loss Charles would be for the Owls, FLW's fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, did not hesitate in praising the midfielder's performances.

"Quite simply, he would be a massive loss, and it would genuinely be a big blow to our season and our hopes of a solid top-half finish," Patrick told Football League World.

"He's been a real asset to Barry Bannan. It's obvious when you watch our games that he's just a classy, classy player, and he has been racking up the assists recently as well.

Sheffield Wednesday would find it hard to replace Charles

Players of Charles' ilk are hard to come by in the Championship and having to dip into the market for a replacement would be a challenge for Röhl's side.

"I think him going in the January transfer window would be even more of an issue with the smaller timeframe to get a replacement because in central midfield we aren't blessed with numbers," Patrick continued.

Beyond Charles and Bannan, Nathaniel Chalobah has returned from injury, while Liam Palmer is another option who could come in. However, Patrick is not convinced they possess the same qualities as Charles.

He said: "Chalobah hasn't played a whole 90 minutes and, with all the respect in the world to Liam Palmer, he is a patch on Charles in midfield. Let's not forget Charles can also drop into the centre-back role, where we are greatly stretched, just effortlessly as well."

Wednesday are progressing well under Röhl this season and much of that has been down to the performances of Charles, who has been a linchpin in the Owls' midfield.
