Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel has been one of the worst Serie A goalkeepers this season, at least according to a data analysis.
The 30-year-old has been the club’s first-choice between the sticks since his arrival in 2022. But after two solid campaigns, he’s been uncharacteristically shaky this term. Although Marco Baroni kept defending him for months, his poor showing against Napoli may have been the final straw.
Therefore, the coach finally dropped the Italian shot-stopper in last weekend’s contest against Venezia, giving Christos Mandas his first Serie A outing of the season. While it remains to be seen if the 23-year-old Greek will consolidate himself as the new Number One, an interesting statistic study from football writer and analyst Rohit Rajeev highlighted Provedel’s feeble showings.
The source used PsxG (post-shot expected goals) and the percentage of saves to identify the best and worst goalkeepers among those who have made at least 10 appearances in Serie A this season. Torino’s Vanja Milinkovic-Savic landed on top, ahead of Genoa’s Nicola Leali and young Venezia custodian Filip Stankovic.
On the contrary, Hellas Verona’s Lorenzo Montipo is at rock-bottom. However, Provedel hasn’t fared much better, finding himself second from bottom. Hence, the stats suggest he has performed even worse than under-fire AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan who is also enduring a torrid campaign. The France international is only a couple of spots ahead of the Lazio man.
