The Blaugrana ultimately emerged triumphant, thanking a trio of late goals for a remarkable 5-4 victory.

As alluded to above, though, on an otherwise positive evening’s work for Hansi Flick’s side, the situation between the posts emerged as a central talking point once more.

This came after Wojciech Szczęsny, reintroduced to Barcelona’s XI for the fixture, was responsible for two high-profile errors.

First, the Pole came flying out of his penalty area before colliding with Alejandro Balde, leaving an open goal behind him for Benfica to slot into.

Then, later in the first-half, Szczęsny gave away a penalty which was subsequently dispatched beyond him.

The former Arsenal and Juventus man did also make a crucial late save prior to Barca’s winner, but it was the subject of his errors which were nevertheless put to Szczęsny post-match.

And, in his response, the 34-year-old went on to provide an insight into just why he is finding it so difficult to adapt to Hansi Flick’s Blaugrana system:

“I’ve never played with such a high defensive line. Wenger demanded a lot from the goalkeeper, but here, the players are so far from me. Even at 34, you can still learn. It’s a great experience.”
