Manchester United are planning to officially welcome their second arrival of the window to Old Trafford next week — despite the deal being agreed in January.

Indeed, Ruben Amorim will see his defensive options bolstered by the addition of young prospect Diego Leon, although it’s expected he will depart on loan to gain increased first-team experience before potentially playing a role in the senior squad in 2026/2027.

United finalised the signing with Cerro Porteno mid-season, but were made to wait until Leon’s 18th birthday in April to formally register him on the books.

Now, Manchester World journalist Rich Fay has confirmed to the M16 faithful that the Paraguayan international ‘will become a United player next week’ when putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.

INEOS chiefs will fork out an upfront fee of £3.2 million, while the transfer sum could rise as high as £7m with add-ons later down the line.

Leon did travel over to Manchester at the start of the year to undergo his medical and become acquainted with staff, meaning his impending arrival will fortunately pose no late hurdles.

If not Leon, Amorim needs defensive signings this summer

In the meantime, reinforcements at the back are necessary this summer irrespective of whether Leon stays put or departs on loan.

Amorim, as things stand, will be navigating pre-season and the beginning of the new campaign with two fewer players at his disposal following the departures of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, both of whom were released when their contracts expired.

Lisandro Martinez will make his long-awaited return to action in time for the Reds’ opening fixtures, though his unrelenting injury setbacks have become a significant concern since his first season-ending layoff in 2022/2023.
