Chelsea are having a great time buying players right now, with Joao Pedro announced as a Blue earlier today.

The Brighton attacker is coming in for a fee somewhere around £50m, and is expected to be an important player for Enzo Maresca’s squad next season.

Chelsea are competing in the Champions League next season and can offer bigger wages than Brighton, so it feels like a natural move up in any case. But there is apparently a specific reason why the former Watford man has chosen this time and this club.

Talksport claim that his desire to move had a lot to do with next summer’s World Cup in the USA. JP has 3 caps for Brazil, and wants to cement himself as their starter ahead of next summer. A move to a big team, playing in the Champions League, will likely help to attract the kind of attention he needs to make that step up.

If that gives him extra motivation to shine for us, so much the better.

World Cup could have further effects on Chelsea transfer deals – in and out

The World Cup next summer is going to come into a lot of players’ thinking, as we’ve already seen with Renato Veiga, who pushed for a move in January despite being a regular backup for the Blues because he wanted to secure a place for Portugal.

We wonder what other effects the impending tournament could have, both on players coming in and going out? Some, like Veiga, will want to leave for more game time. Others, like Joao Pedro, will want moves to bigger teams to try and stake their claims on a bigger stage.
