Some days are so special that they become indelible in the memory. That's how February 24 is for Rubén 'Oso' González, who today is celebrating another anniversary of one of the most important days for a soccer player.
The reason for the celebration was 12 years ago at what is now his home, the Akron Stadium, when the Rojiblanco youth player officially defended the Guadalajara jersey for the first time. It was Matchday 8 of the 2013 Clausura and the Rebaño Sagrado was undefeated in five matches under the guidance of Benjamín Galindo on the bench when they faced León.
After 45 minutes, the scoreboard showed a 1-0 lead for the Rojiblancos with a goal by Marco Fabián at minute 10. In the second half, Matías Britos equalized things at 60' from a set piece and that's when the 'Maestro' decided to change his team: immediately after the goal, he called on a young 'Oso' who was warming up on the touchline and with 43 on his back, he came on in place of Luis 'Vaquerito' Morales.
With the aim of giving balance to the midfield, González joined 'Pato' Araujo and formed a solid block to Guadalajara's recovery zone, which gradually became more settled on the field. Ultimately, Chivas won that match when Marco Fabián scored his brace at 78'.
Twelve years after that great day for Rubén, he has become a regular in the call-ups of the Rebaño Sagrado, with 233 Liga MX matches to his credit and 97 of them as a Rojiblanco.
As from that first day, he is a tireless element in the team's midfield, with an outstanding ability to cover ground and position himself in the best possible place on the field depending on the phase of the game. The 'Bear' usually performs mostly defensive tasks, but when it comes to attacking, he also knows how to contribute from his position.
