Martin Semmes has taken over as London City Lionesses CEO

The London City Lionesses have made plenty of moves this summer and the newly promoted side has just announced a new CEO.

Martin Semmes has finally found a new role after departing Southampton in 2023.

Who is Martin Semmes?

Martin Semmes was CEO of Southampton women for six years before he decided to leave for greener pastures.

The CEO’s new role is vastly different to his challenge with the Saints. London City Lionesses are the first club in women’s football to gain promotion to the WSL without any links to a mens club.

“I’m excited to be joining London City at this key moment in the Club’s journey,” he said after the appointment was official.

“What Michele, Kynisca and her excellent operational team at London City have built is phenomenal and really demonstrates the potential of women’s football.

“I am really looking forward to the season ahead and putting the operation in place to enable success on the pitch.”

London City Lionesses are owned by Michele Kang who also owns NWSL team Washington Spirit.

A busy summer for London City Lionesses

Despite it being their first year in England’s first division, the London City Lionesses have been extremely busy in the transfer market.

As well as their new CEO the Lionesses have also secured 11 new players.

London City Lionesses transfers

  • Danielle van de Donk – Lyon (free agent)
  • Sanni Franssi – Real Sociedad (free agent)
  • Freya Godfrey – Arsenal (undisclosed fee)
  • Isa Kaardinal – Ajax (undisclosed fee)
  • Elene Lete – Real Sociedad (undisclosed fee)
  • Elena Linari – Roma (undisclosed fee)
  • Nikita Parris – Brighton (free)
  • Paula Partido – Real Madrid (undisclosed fee)
  • Poppy Pattinson – Brighton (free)
  • Sophia Poor – Aston Villa (undisclosed fee)
  • Teyah Goldie – Arsenal (free agent)

The Lionesses biggest signings are without a doubt veteran England star Nikita Paris as well as Arsenal’s Teyah Goldie and Freya Godfrey.

There are also reports that London City have held formal talks with Arsenal over the signing of Beth Mead.

Mead’s contract with Arsenal is set to expire at the end of this season and with the Gunners signing Lioness teammate and fellow winger Chloe Kelly to a permanent contract, Mead could be on the move.
