Which clubs were winners and losers in the transfer window?

It’s been a busier than usual transfer window for Premier League clubs, with £370 million spent compared to £100 million last year.

But which clubs have done the best and worst?

Manchester City

It’s hard to argue against Manchester City being the ‘winners’ of this year’s window. With four main signings: Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush for £59m, Palmeiras’ Vitor Reis for £29.6m, Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov for £33.6m and Porto’s Nico Gonzalez for £52 million, Pep Guardiola has reset his whole squad.

Many clubs would be pleased with that sort of business in the summer transfer window. City have spent £180 million this January.

Aston Villa

Villa have had a brilliant window by anyone’s standards. They brought in £65 million for Jhon Duran, kept hold of Ollie Watkins, and signed Donyell Malen, Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford on loan.

Rashford should be hungry to prove himself in the rest of the season. The jury however will be out on Malen and Asensio. Two players who have been plagued by inconsistency for years, and both moved around a lot.

Unai Emery is an excellent manager though, and if anyone can get the best out of these players, whose talent has never been in question, it is him.

Tottenham

Spurs have had a decent window in the end. Mathys Tel in on loan yesterday saved it. It’s been reported that a last minute phone call from Ange Postecoglou changed Tel’s decision. The 19-year-old has been in high demand this winter, with Arsenal and Manchester United also sniffing around.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was brought in at the beginning of January and has been brilliant for the Lilywhites, particularly in his first game, the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

The defensive recruitment of Kevin Danso from Lens is also a huge positive. The centre-back is mobile and adept at playing out from the back. With Spurs’ injury woes, and Cristian Romero still not being ready, this was a necessary coup.

Manchester United

United have had a bad window. No two ways about it. They arguably lost their best forward, Marcus Rashford, and signed no replacement. Ruben Amorim may have felt he could not trust Rashford, but to not replace his goals is negligent.

Given Amorim played Kobbie Mainoo up front against Crystal Palace, he remains unconvinced with Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee either. So where will the goals come from for the rest of the season?

Arsenal

To those around the club, it is no surprise that the Gunners haven’t signed anyone this window. But could it be costly?

With the long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, Arsenal are now extremely reliant on the fitness of Kai Havertz. If the German was to be unfit for a time, it would spell absolute disaster.

Arsenal fans will be hoping this decision does not come back to bite them.
