Bologna have made it more difficult for Roma to enter the Champions League, as if Atalanta win either of their two remaining games, there will not be a sixth slot.

La Dea won the Europa League, which is worth automatic qualification for the Champions League, but had already booked their place in Serie A.

Their spot will bump down only if they finish in fifth place and no higher, because the rules were set by UEFA when only the top four entered the Champions League, before Serie A earned a fifth thanks to their superior club ranking.

What Roma need from Atalanta

Bologna ended their season this evening with a 2-0 defeat to Genoa, so they finish on 68 points.

It makes it trickier for Roma, as now they need Atalanta to not win any of the remaining two matches against Torino and Fiorentina.

The good news is that if Atalanta draw both those games, then they will finish level on 68 points with Bologna, but the Rossoblu have a superior head-to-head record, so it would leave La Dea in fifth.

If Bologna, Atalanta and Juventus all finish together on 68 points, then with the head-to-head records, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side would be last and remain in fifth place.

If Atalanta beat Torino on Sunday, then Roma’s hopes are already ended even before the rescheduled game with Fiorentina on June 2.
