Wembley Stadium was the venue for a titanic tussle with 78,346 on hand to see the US Women's National Team take on England in an historic soccer friendly. It might have ended 0-0, but the match delivered drama, tension, and plenty to think about. It was a game defined by balance-the best defense from England going up against the creative, relentless attack of the Americans, who remain undefeated in 2024.
From the first whistle, it was evident that the USWNT meant to set the tone of the game. With Rose Lavelle on the ball, it seemed like she had a map of the field as she orchestrated the midfield with brilliance. Up front, Alyssa Thompson nearly put the US ahead in the fifth minute, but England's goalkeeper, Mary Earps, was sharp.
The Americans were on top. Possession was 59 percent to 41 percent, while they had five shots on target in the first half, compared to England's single attempt. Casey Krueger and Sam Coffey both tested Earps with promising strikes, yet a little precision evaded as the chances remained incomplete.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with Lindsey Horan restoring the USWNT lead before being correctly flagged offside. Moments later, another flashpoint in this absorbing contest saw the referee initially point to the penalty spot for a supposed England handball, only to overturn the decision upon VAR intervention.
As the game wore on, England started to balance the game, as Beth Mead was constantly a threat in the attack. However, the US defense, marshaled by the experienced Alyssa Naeher, held firm. Naeher, who recently announced her retirement at the end of the year, showed why she is considered one of the best goalkeepers of her generation, earning her 10th shutout of 2024.
And then, of course, there was the added storyline of coach Emma Hayes. A native of Camden, London, Hayes returned to Wembley, the same pitch she made a glittering career as Chelsea's head coach. Under her guidance, USWNT are undefeated in 2024, with a record of 17 wins and four draws. The emotional connection to the stadium and her ability to mix young talent with seasoned veterans were in full view.
While the USWNT dominated much of the match, England showed resilience and defensive organization. The Lionesses, runners-up in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, proved they’re ready to tackle the challenges of 2024. As the US focused on speed and relentless pressure, England capitalized on counterattacking opportunities whenever they arose.
Despite being unable to find the back of the net, the stats illustrate the USWNT's dominance: 10 shots to England's 4 and dominant possession throughout. The American defense was solid, allowing just one shot on target during the full 90 minutes.
