It is a great time to be a Newcastle United fan.
The Magpies finally ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Arne Slot’s men were the favourites, but Newcastle produced an excellent display to seal a memorable victory.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were the goalscorers for Eddie Howe’s men, but Sandro Tonali also put in a sensational display.
Tonali carried his brilliant form into Thursday’s Nations League fixture. He delivered a top performance but Italy went on to lose 2-1 to Germany in the quarter-final first leg.
The 24-year-old netted a ninth-minute opener with a first-team finish after Jonathan Tah cleared Matteo Politano’s cross into his path.
However, Germany responded well as substitute Tim Kleindienst headed the leveller before Leon Goretzka added another late on to complete the turnaround.
The Italian press were left hugely impressed with Tonali’s display, with Corriere dello Sport calling him “unstoppable.”
The newspaper gave him a 7.5 rating, writing: “Everything you would like from your favourite midfielder: he gets into the space as Spalletti likes (remember Perrotta?), he is in the right place twice (and scores on the first occasion), unstoppable.”
Tonali had 51 touches in the match and completed 27 of his 29 passes (93% accuracy).
He completed 100% of his long balls and won seven of his 10 ground duels.
The experienced midfielder lost the ball nine times but registered two key passes, four tackles, three interceptions and two clearances.
Tonali has been a key player for Newcastle this season, featuring in 26 Premier League matches and making two goal contributions.
