Liverpool are locked in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the signing of playmaker Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old is widely expected to become a new Liverpool player in the near future with negotiations ongoing over the exact structure of the fee.

Leverkusen are reported to be holding out for a maximum value of £126m but Liverpool are not content to pay all of it.

That’s why talks in recent days are said to have been conducted over additional payments - which will end up making up a percentage of the overall fee paid for Wirtz.

The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions are already reported to have turned down TWO bids from Liverpool that fell short of the mark.

That said, sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards are still expected to walk away from this high-stakes poker game with the biggest prize.

FSG BLOWN AWAY by Hughes and Edwards

And in a new report from TBR Football it’s been revealed what Hughes and Edwards’ paymasters at Fenway Sports Group think about these negotiations.

FSG have RARELY splashed out like this at Liverpool - reserving the majority of their big spending for the Boston Red Sox.

But club bosses are said to be DELIGHTED at how talks are progressing for Wirtz - who will become the most expensive-ever signing in English football history.

“I really can’t explain just how happy Liverpool are behind the scenes with this deal. FSG, the club’s owners, are blown away by the work of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes – those two have put so much work into this move, not just this month but the lead-up to it also,” transfer expert Graeme Bailey said.

Reds are flexing their muscle

“Liverpool are the Premier League’s best on the field, and it’s hard to argue they are the best off the field now too.”

Liverpool under Hughes have largely sat out the transfer windows up until now. They signed Federico Chiesa last summer and added Giorgi Mamardashvili while allowing him to stay on loan at Valencia.

There were no signings, meanwhile, in the January window. Allied with sales including Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho, it gave Liverpool a significant budget heading into this summer.

With Premier League-winning prize money, increased Champions League participation fees, new sponsorships secured, a new stand providing more matchday income and a fresh kit deal with Adidas, the future is certainly looking rosy for the Reds - who are about to flex their muscles in the market.
