There has been further information to emerge today regarding Celtic’s potential interest in West Ham midfielder Andy Irving. The Scottish international has been linked with a move to the club for some time, and now it appears that Celtic may be preparing a second bid for the 25-year-old.

Interest in Irving has been evident for around a year, with previous reports hinting at Celtic’s long-standing admiration for the midfielder. As we highlighted yesterday on The Celtic Star, speculation surrounding the player’s future refuses to subside, and recent reports suggest that a fresh offer could be imminent.

According to West Ham publication Claret & Hugh in their exclusive piece, West Ham have received only one bid for their surplus players this summer—a £2.2 million offer for Irving. That initial bid, it seems, came last month.

Graham Potter is reportedly valuing Irving closer to £3.5 million

West Ham manager Graham Potter is reportedly valuing Irving closer to £3.5 million, though the article indicates that a £3 million offer may be sufficient to secure a deal. The Hammers still have several players available for transfer, but interest in these players has been limited. So far, Irving is the only player to attract a formal offer.

A source cited by Claret & Hugh, who the publication state has been involved in multiple Premier League and European transfers over the years, confirmed:

“There’s a lot of interest but only one bid so far, and that was last month. I think they’ll get another offer soon.”

Celtic are reportedly in the mix for Irving, but there is also a note of caution, as theRangers are said to be monitoring the midfielder as well. As we all know from experience, that this can sometimes be a tactic used by clubs or agents to generate additional interest or drive up the player’s value. Nevertheless, all signs point to Irving leaving the London club before the transfer deadline. Whether that move will see him join Celtic—or another club—remains to be seen.

Securing Andy Irving could represent a change to Celtic’s well stocked midfield options. A versatile player with Premier League experience, Irving could bring something different in terms of profile to Brendan Rodgers squad.

An interesting observation regarding how signing Irving could impact Celtic’s squad structure

Adding to the discussion, Johhno, a regular and valued contributor to The Celtic Star comments section, made an interesting observation regarding how signing Irving could impact Celtic’s squad structure:

‘What has gone under the radar so far during this summer, has been how we have actually created competition for our 8 homegrown quota positions. Currently a choice between Murray and Welsh is in operation.

‘So even signing Irving, could that potentially allow for both Murray and Kenny to go out on loan, possibly for a full season, in order to gain more game time and experience, for next season in mind.

‘Would mean Welsh keeping the last homegrown place within the squad imo. With some of the prospects already within the B team, then competition growing for our 8 homegrown positions within a 25-man European squad, is far healthier than we have been for years, regarding this issue imo. Remember we only signed McCowan with minutes to spare last summer to fulfil our homegrown quota requirements.’

A very interesting perspective, that a potential Irving signing could not only strengthen Celtic’s midfield but also allow the club to develop young talent while ensuring compliance with homegrown squad regulation.
