West Ham United are hoping to beat competition from across Europe to land Lille duo Angel Gomes and Jonathan David this summer.
Gomes and David are out of contract with the French side in the summer and available on free transfers. Clubs across Europe are courting the pair, though West Ham hope the prospect of a prominent role in Graham Potter’s rebuild can lure them to the London Stadium.
Gomes is being heavily linked with a return to England after five seasons in France. The midfielder came through the academy ranks at Manchester United, but made just 10 senior appearances before leaving for Lille.
Last season, he was the joint-leading assist provider in Ligue 1 and made his England debut in September. The Guardian are reporting that Aston Villa, Spurs and Manchester United are also weighing up approaches, alongside clubs from the Bundesliga.
Gomes’ club teammate David is set to be one of the most in-demand free agents of the summer window. The Canada international has turned down a new deal with Lille and looks set to leave at the end of campaign.
David has scored 105 goals in 221 appearances for Lille and has breached 20 goals in all competitions in each of the last three seasons. At just 25, he is viewed as a long-term solution for West Ham at centre-forward.
The East Londoners are currently without Michail Antonio, who is recovering from a road traffic accident, and Niclas Fullkrug through injury. The latter has endured an injury-hit debut season at West Ham since arriving from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
However, competition is set to be fierce for David, who has suitors in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia.
