Wesley Fofana’s move from Leicester to Chelsea is eye-catching for several reasons.
The 22-year-old joins the Blues for a reported £69.5m fee (per The Athletic’s David Ornstein) despite making just nine Premier League appearances in the last year, although that was down to a nasty injury.
He is Chelsea’s second priciest arrival ever after Romelu Lukaku’s return last summer but there is an even more interesting statistic to come from the deal.
In making the move, Fofana becomes the most expensive player of all time without an international cap.
The former Saint-Étienne stopper does have five appearances to his name for France’s Under-21 side.
He takes the title from Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte who joined from Athletic Club in 2018 for £57m.
Frustrated with a lack of opportunities for France, the country of his birth, under Didier Deschamps, he has since switched allegiances to Spain and won 15 caps for La Roja, scoring one goal.
