Graham Potter has defended his start to life in east London but says that things must improve.
Following the latest rather toothless display against Wolves on Tuesday night, many fans are concerned by the lack of invention and fire power in the side, as we look set on a bleak end to a poor season.
Potter though highlighted the improvements made by his side in recent weeks, in being now far more difficult to beat – however, the West Ham boss admitted that things must get better in the other end of the pitch,
“We went from being not competitive in games, to being competitive in every game. Nearly isn’t enough, so we have to keep working,” said Potter to the press, as reported by the clubs Official Website.
“I understand the data and the waiting for the lift-off. The team have had some issues, including conceding goals, and I think we’ve tried to fix that.
“We’ve been competitive in all the games, which is good, but when you’re changing things it isn’t so obvious that results go up as directly as you’d like.
“We know things need to improve, and we’ll keep working hard.”
Potter and his Hammers side take on high-flying Bournemouth, who will undoubtedly be a huge test. However their loss to Ipswich last night provides hope that their confidence and form will have taken a knock.
“They’re a well-organised team, who are clear about what they do,” said the Hammers boss. “The coach there has done a really good job, and they’re all really aligned there.
“They’ve had some tricky results, but that’s how ruthless the league is. Over Andoni’s time there, he’s done a great job. His team plays with clarity and intensity, so they’re a really good Premier League team.”
Potter was also asked about Lucas Paqueta, who’s hearing with the FA is set to conclude soon, with the boss heaping praise on the Brazil star for his attitude.
“I had a good chat to him recently, and he’s been really good with a great attitude. He just loves football, and West Ham,” added Potter.
