Werder Bremen keeper Michael Zetterer has walked back some recent comments he made to a Munich-based newspaper.Zetterer spoke to reporters following Bremen’s first pre-season friendly, which also happened to fall on the occasion of his 30th birthday. The former Manchester City target may be on his way out of the Bundesliga after all.

I didn’t say that,” Zetterer clarified when asked about his statement that he remained the undisputed number one in Bremen’s net. “What is true is that I had very good talks with the coach and those responsible when it comes to the pre-season. They’ve made it clear that I’ll go into pre-season as the number one. But we haven’t talked about the season yet.

In football, one should naturally never say never,” Zetterer continued. “And it’s no secret that Werder needs income and that no player in our squad is unsellable. I certainly won’t be sitting on the bench again. That’s not what I have in mind for myself.”

Zetterer will receive a challenge in training camp from Werder’s young goalkeeping prospect Mio Backhaus, who was signed to a lucrative contract extension this summer. Zetterer himself was touted for the German national team during a particularly strong stretch last season.

It stands to reason that Zetterer would not turn down a chance to raise his profile with a larger club.
