Week One Liga Portugal schedule announced – Benfica opener postponed

Excitement is building as we near the big kick-off of the Liga Portugal 2025/26 season, although in terms of their league debut Benfica and Rio Ave fans will have to be a little more patient.

Champions Sporting get the ball rolling on Friday August 8th (8.15pm kick-off) as they begin their quest for a third straight league title away at Casa Pia. Although the two clubs are Lisbon neighbours, the match will be played 80 km north of the capital, given that the Gansos are still renovating their stadium and will continue to play their home matches at the Rio Maior Municipal Stadium.

The standout fixture in the opening round of matches is at the Estádio do Dragão on Saturday August 9th (8.30pm) as the new-look FC Porto host Vitória SC.

The day after it is the turn of the newly promoted teams to take their bow as Tondela and Alverca begin their campaign back in the top flight with away assignments at Braga and Alverca respectively.

Estoril v Estrela da Amadora was on the final matchday of 2024/25 and curiously it is on the very first matchday of the new campaign. The visitors will be hoping to improve on the 4-0 thumping they took in May.

Benfica’s match at home to Rio Ave has been postponed as it falls in between the two legs of the Eagles’ Champions League qualifier against Nice. The match has provisionally been put back to September 23rd, although that date is subject to confirmation.
