Wayne Rooney has been banned for one match after red card against Blackburn Rovers | OneFootball

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been hit with a ban and a fine for his red card earlier in the month.

Rooney is the club’s all-time top goalscorer with 253 goals and spent 13 seasons at Old Trafford.

The 38 year old has had numerous coaching jobs since his retirement from playing at Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City.

He was appointed head coach of Plymouth Argyle in the summer and has had mixed fortunes so far, as his team lie 13th in the Championship table.

Rooney was sent off for the first time in his managerial career when Plymouth conceded a late equaliser against Blackburn Rovers and vociferously complained to the match officials two Saturdays ago.

The Englishman would have the last laugh however as his team scored an even later winner in additional time to claim a 2-1 victory.

The Sun report that he has “been hit with a one-match touchline ban and a £5,500 fine after receiving a red card.

The Football Association’s statement claimed, “it was alleged that the manager’s conduct around the 87th minute was improper and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official, which led to his dismissal.”

“It was further alleged that following his dismissal his conduct was improper and/or violent. It was also alleged that by returning to the field of play after being dismissed his behaviour was improper.”

Rooney admitted to the charges and will now not be on the touchline against Cardiff City this lunchtime kickoff.

Commenting on his red card Rooney stated, “in the Championship you don’t have VAR so the officials missed it and your emotions kick in and you know, I’m a passionate person, we want to win.”

Rooney’s side can jump to 10th with a win against Cardiff and can draw themselves ever closer to the playoff battle for a lucrative spot in next season’s Premier League.
