Nicolas Jackson scored for Chelsea on Saturday to win the game and end a 13 games scoreless streak.
On the London is Blue podcast yesterday, presenter Nick Verlaney laid out his thoughts on the striker’s progress and status. The Senegal star has shown some really impressive form at times, especially earlier this season, but has had some truly shocking performances, moments, and runs like the one that just ended.

“I’ve made no bones about it – Nico Jackson was a player who I didn’t know enough about when he came to Chelsea… he has done more than a lot of people have expected. But I think we had a little bit more expectation for him this year than last year,” Verlaney said.
“Yeah he went on dips and bumps where he went a few games without scoring in a row… but it was never 13 games in a row. And now we’re at a point where… I think the narrative is that we’re in a wait and see situation with Nico, because he didn’t go from strength to strength year over year.”
We’d have to agree with that for the most part – it’s been a funny old ride with Nico. People underestimated him at first, then he showed us all how good he can be, then we raised our expectations, and just as he was being talked about as one of the best strikers in the league, he went into the horrific slump he’s only just got out of.
Where does that leave us? Very much in a “wait and see,” as Dan says. We will be signing a striker in the summer for sure, and it’s up to Jackson to compete with him.
