Pundit Rory Jennings is not a universally popular man among Chelsea fans – in fact, forget the universal, he’s just not popular. But his takes on the current ownership do chime with a lot of unhappy Blues.
His thoughts on the protest last week were clear in a video he made this week:
“The time for protest against this [ownership] will come, no doubt about it. And it will be stronger than anything that they could possibly envisage. But I think it will come when they declare war – which they will – on the CPO [Chelsea Pitch Owners],” Jennings explained.
“When that happens, that’s when people will genuinely mobilise, and that is when they will feel the wrath of the Chelsea fans. And I really, really do look forward to that day.”
You can see him make his point in the clip embedded here:

We wish Jennings was wrong, we really do. But in this case he might be onto something. The CPO issue does seem like it will eventually be the catalyst and the central issue around which everything will be crystalised in the battle for Chelsea’s soul.
That will be when the ownership’s desire to make the club more profitable, through putting us in a bigger stadium, starts to clash with the one area the fans still retain some control – Stamford Bridge itself.
The complications and limitations around redeveloping our home ground will make moving to a new site infinitely preferable to the owners, and they will have to do all they can to convince supporters that it’s the right move for the club in the long run.
Of course some fans will agree with this stance, making the whole affair likely to be a civil war more than just fans against owners.
