FC Barcelona continue to assess their current squad and consider any major improvements that they can make. However, while signings are definitely being looked at for the future, the club also wants to ensure continuity. To do that, Barcelona has been focused on player renewals.
Over the course of the last two months, it has been clear enough that Barça has been giving priority to player renewals over new signings. By doing this, the Catalan club has managed to ensure that their key players remain committed to the club for the years to come.
With young Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi being the latest name to commit himself to the club for the future, the club seems to be focusing a lot on younger talents. The likes of Pedri, Gavi, Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, and others have already renewed their contracts with the club recently.
However, that does not mean that the club will forget about their veterans and experienced players. Previously, it was being reported that a certain 33-year-old Barcelona defender could be next in line to have his contract renewed, and it seems that it will now become a reality soon.
According to the ever-reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona and Inigo Martinez are set to seal their new deal with one another. This new deal will then see the Spanish centre-back renew his contract for one additional year and extend his stay until 2026 instead.
On the back of a strong campaign so far, one in which he has become a vital piece for Hansi Flick’s team, Inigo Martinez has earned the club’s trust. For Barcelona, he is capable of performing at the top level and against the best of the best, so extending his stay just comes naturally.
Romano also confirmed that the agreement for this contract had already been reached in January of this year, and it is now time to seal the deal soon as well. However, other reports have recently suggested that complications could be there when it comes to Martinez’s renewal.
