Blackburn Rovers are in advanced talks to sign Montpellier defender Modibo Sagnan this summer.

According to The Lancashire Telegraph, the Championship side are looking to sign the centre-back amid competition from Leeds United and Sunderland.

The 26-year-old made 27 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, as the club finished bottom of the table and suffered relegation.

This could open the door for a move to English football, with Valerien Ismael keen to bolster his squad after his side finished seventh in the second division last season.

When asked about the prospect of signing Sagnan, FLW’s Blackburn fan pundit Simon Middlehurst claimed that it’s an unexpected transfer target given the number of defensive options at their disposal.

He believes it might be an indication that Danny Batth might not renew his contract amid its June expiry, or potentially Hayden Carter or Scott Wharton might be leaving the club.

“Very, very strange one that, we’ve already got four centre-halves at the minute, if Danny Batth signs a new contract, hopefully that will get sorted soon and signed on,” Middlehurst told Football League World.

“Dominic Hyam and Danny Batth were instrumental last season at the back, Hayden Carter was obviously a bit part player due to injuries and Scott Wharton missed the year out, he’s going to want to come back firing next season and want to be playing as much as he can after missing a year out of football.

“So a very, very strange one that.

“I’m not entirely too sure what the thinking behind it might be, maybe preparing for Danny Batth not signing and having some more cover.

“Or maybe they could possibly be losing Carter or Wharton, but very interesting to see.

“It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks.”

Sagnan addition would be interesting for Blackburn

Blackburn have defensive options, but bringing in someone of Sagnan’s quality could be the kind of upgrade Ismael is looking for.

Wharton hasn’t played all year, so relying on him to provide cover next season could be a risk.

Sagnan also has top flight experience, and can be added competition for game time to keep Batth and Hyam on their toes.

While it’s not an area of the team that immediately needs improvement, it might not be a bad idea for Blackburn to make this move given Sagnan’s potential to perform well at this level.
