Union St Gilloise defender Alessio Castro-Montes is set to depart Belgium today. According to HLN, the defender will join Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln. With just one season left on Castro-Montes, Union St Gilloise are cashing in now rather than potentially losing the defender next season for free. With midfielder Charles Vanhoutte also set to depart for Ligue 1 today, Union St Gilloise may well do some late shopping in the transfer market to replace these two. One name being linked with a move to Brussels is KV Mechelen captain Rob Schoofs.
Castro-Montes joined Union back in 2023 from Gent, where he had spent four seasons. The full-back had been one of the best in his position in the Belgian Pro League, making 182 appearances for the Buffaloes with 14 goals and 18 assists. During his first season with Union, Castro-Montes made 47 appearances, scoring four goals and providing three assists. During their title winning season last year the defender missed a number of games with injuries, but still managed to perform well. Castro-Montes played 29 games across all competitions, scoring twice and providing five assists.
Castro-Montes will now leave Belgium for the first time by joining 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga. The Billy Goats won promotion from the 2 Bundesliga last season.
